The Royal Scratching Post

Excerpts and Inspiration from issue# aNumber aMonth, 2007

Dedicated to the spirit of Lionism WE SERVE

by Anne Hoag, Editor

...awaiting copy

...until then

...something from the well

A Lion's Tree

The old lion walks
Up to the tree
Leans against
And rubs for free

It makes no difference
To you or me
But to them
It's ecstasy

Reading Room

There is a room, both warm and soft
With sturdy beams, ceiling cross'd.
Where sun hangs fixed, t'ween earth and cloud
Just beyond the window's shroud.

Where quill and ink, book and paper
Commune together in silent measure
And thoughts linger, if but a moment,
Paying tribute to forgotten poets.

Authors of strange and ragged verse
Bound dry in tomes of lyric terse,
The world, for this,
May be the worse...

At knowing not in greater depth and caring less
That upon each and every breast
Have fallen tears of sorrow
And perhaps some of happiness.

They linger still among the shelves
Rediscovered by singular folk
That through volumes dig and delve
Until, for some,

By fortune's stroke,
They chance upon a single note
A bell thought, that ringing clear
Signs deaf from hearts another tear.
